Understanding before Solutions

In a world of templated solutions, it can be tempting to jump straight to the offer. But when it comes to meaningful partnerships, especially memberships, the most valuable thing you can do is slow down and understand first.

Understanding a business before offering a solution isn’t just good practice. It’s the difference between selling to someone and genuinely helping them move forward.

Ultimately, every business is different.

Two businesses can be in the same industry, at the same stage, with the same revenue, and still have completely different needs.

  • One may be struggling with visibility.
  • Another with systems.
  • Another with clarity, or connection.

If you recommend the same solution to all three, at least one of them will feel misunderstood. At worst, they’ll feel sold to rather than supported.

Trust is built through curiosity! People don’t trust solutions, they trust people who understand them.

When you ask thoughtful questions, listen carefully, and reflect back what you’ve heard, you signal something powerful: “I care about your outcome, not just our offering.”

That trust makes recommendations easier to accept and decisions easier to make. Better fit = better results.

When you take time to understand:

  • Goals
  • Challenges
  • Priorities
  • Capacity
  • Stage of growth

…you can confidently recommend the option that will actually deliver value.

This leads to:

  • Higher satisfaction
  • Better engagement
  • Longer-term relationships

In other words: learning first creates better results for everyone.

That honesty builds credibility and long-term loyalty.

Member relationships work best when they feel like a partnership, not a product.

By understanding the business first, you are able to create relevance instead of overwhelm, you demonstrate confidence in value, and build relationships that last.

Remember:

  • Before offering a solution, offer understanding.
  • When people feel heard, your recommendation carries weight.
  • When your recommendation fits, membership delivers impact.
  • And when impact is clear, the decision becomes easy.
